Acute-care preceptors for AGACNP students across Colorado

The AGACNP role lives inside the hospital. Your rotations should sit in units that manage unstable, complex, and critically ill adults from adolescence, around age 13, through the frail elderly. In Colorado that means medical, surgical, cardiac, and neuro intensive care units, progressive care and step-down floors, busy emergency departments, and hospitalist and inpatient internal medicine services.

Primary care clinics and family practice offices do not build acute-care competency, so we do not place AGACNP students there. If a rotation cannot expose you to invasive lines, ventilated patients, rapid response, and acute decompensation, it will not satisfy the intent of the track.

Most of Colorado's high-acuity capacity is concentrated along the Front Range, the urban corridor that runs from Fort Collins and Loveland through the Denver metro to Colorado Springs and Pueblo. This is where the state's Level I trauma centers, academic medical centers, and largest systems sit, and where adult-gerontology acute-care roles cluster.

The Denver metro anchors the state. Denver Health runs the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center, a Level I center and safety-net teaching hospital, while the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora functions as the region's academic referral center. Large systems including UCHealth, HealthONE, and CommonSpirit operate tertiary hospitals with the deep ICU and specialty benches acute-care students need. Colorado Springs and the Loveland area add regional Level I and II capacity.

West of the Front Range the picture changes quickly. Grand Junction is the referral hub for the Western Slope, and much of the mountain west and eastern plains is served by critical access hospitals with a handful of beds and no on-site intensivist team. Students in those regions frequently travel to a metro for their ICU and specialty blocks, so building travel time into your plan early is realistic.

Colorado is a full practice authority state under the Colorado State Board of Nursing, which places it in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners full-practice category. An experienced nurse practitioner can evaluate, diagnose, order, and prescribe without a mandated physician collaboration agreement, and after a defined mentorship period gains full prescriptive authority.

For your preceptor search this helps. A seasoned AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG can serve as your primary preceptor on their own signature, and an intensivist or hospitalist physician can precept as well. In critical care you will often work alongside a physician-led team regardless of state law, because that is simply how ICUs are staffed. Full practice authority widens the pool of nurse practitioners who can independently take you on, which is the practical benefit here.

Some hours are competitive everywhere, and Colorado is no exception. High-acuity ICU time, procedural and advanced skills exposure such as central lines, arterial lines, and intubation assists, and consistent access to a single preceptor across a block are the usual pressure points.

The adolescent end of the age range, which begins around age 13, is another. AGACNP scope covers adolescents through the frail elderly, but many adult ICUs rarely admit patients under 18, so you may need a deliberate rotation to capture younger acute presentations. We factor these gaps in when we build a plan rather than leaving them to the last term.

Hour totals are set by your program, not by one national rule. The 2022 National Task Force standards recommend a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours for a nurse practitioner track, while national certification through ANCC or the AACN Certification Corporation requires at least 500 faculty-supervised hours. Accredited AGACNP programs commonly publish totals of roughly 500 to 750 or more, and many sit below 750, so confirm your own number.

Simulation hours generally do not count toward the direct patient care requirement. When you know your target and the units you still owe, matching gets far more precise, which is why we ask for it up front. Certification as an AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG confirms your preceptor is credentialed in the acute-care population you are training for.
