What does the AGACNP adult population cover?
Within the adult-gerontology span, adults are the broad middle, the working-age and midlife population who make up the bulk of acute inpatient admissions. The AGACNP is certified to manage the acutely and critically ill adult, and this is where the role's competencies are exercised most heavily.
The acute presentations are familiar from every inpatient setting: sepsis and severe infection, respiratory failure, acute coronary syndromes and heart failure, acute kidney injury, gastrointestinal bleeding, diabetic emergencies, post-operative complications, trauma, and the acute decompensation of chronic conditions. Managing these safely, escalating when needed, and coordinating care across specialties is the substance of adult acute-care practice, and the substance of what your program is preparing you to do.
Where do you manage adults on rotation?
Adults are seen across the entire acute trace, so nearly every rotation contributes to your adult-population experience. The ICU teaches management of the critically ill adult; the step-down unit teaches the closely monitored adult; the emergency department teaches the undifferentiated adult; and inpatient specialty and hospitalist services teach depth and breadth in adult inpatient medicine.
Because adults are the core population, programs rarely need a dedicated adult rotation; the population is built into the whole curriculum. The planning question is not whether you will see adults, but whether your rotations collectively cover the full adult-gerontology span, from young adults through the frail elderly, that your certification expects.
